Why do lash extensions look different on everyone?

Why do lash extensions look different on everyone?

Here's how you explain this tricky subject to a client:

Lash extensions are not one size fits all, your lash tech will apply a set of lashes that are totally unique to you, your eye shape and compatibility of your natural lashes after consulting with you + trying to reach your desired look! This is not as simple as choosing a set off of Pinterest, though! Everyone's eyes are designed differently! Just like fingerprints, no two lash sets are the same.

There are several factors that go into the final look of a lash extension: length, curl, and diameter. This specific combination, which is unique to every client, is why everyone’s lash extensions look different.

LENGTH:

Lash extensions come in a variety of lengths, mostly from 7mm all the way to 15mm and longer.

  • Short lashes would fall in the 7mm to 9mm range.
  • Medium length lashes are generally 9mm to 12mm.
  • Long Lashes would be those measuring 13mm to 14mm.

And there’s always longer! …Extra long lash extensions can be 15mm or longer on natural lashes that can safely support this length!

Your lash technician will determine the appropriate mix of lengths to use for your lashes during your consult and after physically looking at your natural lash; for example, super long lashes adhered to a natural short lash will weigh on the natural lash after a while, which can result in droopy looking lashes and can even damage the lash follicle and natural lash. As a general rule of thumb, lash extensions should not touch your glasses or your eyebrows, and you should never feel like you’re wearing them – lash extensions should feel weightless! If so, they may be just a little too long.

You might have more natural lashes on the left eye causing the other one to appear fuller. This is where thickness can play a role.

THICKNESS:

Just as the length and curl of your lash extensions must work with your natural lashes, the thickness of your lash extensions must also complement your natural lash.

Thinner natural lashes I may use as small as a 0.02

Thicker lashes a 0.05 & 0.07 may be appropriate.

It is so important that your lash artist OR you as the lash artist carry different varieties!

If you have thin natural lashes then a heavier lash extension is simply not appropriate – it could damage your lash or follicle and leave you with even less lashes than you started with!

A good lash tech will always examine the natural state of your lashes before selecting the appropriate extensions and make sure that your natural lash can support the weight of the extension being applied.

You could also have different eye shapes on each eye as well, causing the same lash extensions to look completely different. Which brings us to...

CURL:

Lash extensions come in many curls, which can be used by the lash artist to create different looks. It’s important that your lash tech chooses a curl that will work with the curl of your natural lash, because different curls are more suitable for different types of lashes!

  • J Curl is rarely used in the industry; it’s almost straight with a slight curl, like a lowercase “j”.  I like to use this on hooded eyes! I have also used this on a client that wants a longer lash without it looking dramatic.
  • B Curl is the next curl up, and gives just a little more curl when looking straight on.  I rarely use this curl since it’s less curly than many people’s natural lashes, but I have used this for clients that literally just want "a mascara look".
  • C curl gives a more classic, wide-eyed look, and is suitable for just about any client unless the natural lash is super super straight. This is one of my most commonly used curls in todays trends!
  • D curl is a step curlier than the C curl, and can be used on natural lashes that have quite a bit of natural curl already, or to give straight lashes a dramatic look. This is one of my best selling curls @ AK and what you want to use if your client answers yes to "Do you want to see your lashes in your selfies?"
  • L curl is shaped kind of like the letter L, and gives a beautiful lift to super straight and downward-pointing natural lashes. I personally do not use this lash, however I know many lash artist that love it and I think it's something that is going to be a trend in our future!

I personally like to select a blend of curls on most of my clients to give a wispier natural look, I feel it waters down the "false-lash" look, however some clients prefer that! This is why a consult is crucial!

Also different clients have different lash layers! Check this out below!
